The 17-Minute Reset

A recent Oprah Podcast clip offers a memorable prompt: spend 17 intentional minutes outside each day.

The exact “dose” of nature is still being studied, but the broader pattern is compelling. In one nationally representative study of 19,806 adults, people who reported spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature were more likely to report good health and high well-being than people who reported none. It didn’t appear to matter whether those two hours came from one longer visit or several shorter ones.

Because the study was observational, it shows an association, not a guaranteed prescription. Still, the design takeaway is useful: make daily contact with nature easier.

Living walls and indoor gardens aren’t a replacement for going outdoors, but they can help create small, everyday opportunities to pause, look up, and reconnect.
